Welcome

Welcome

Hi there! I am a first time mom, a trauma surgeon, and a wife, a friend, a daughter. I’ve had enough of all the judging and here to remind you (and myself) that you are enough. I’ll share the trials, errors, and successes of being a working mom while mixing in bits of fun.

This is what being sick should look like—cuddled This is what being sick should look like—cuddled up in bed with your favorite non-human companions.

First off, I’m not sick. And this picture is over a month old.

Think about where all you’ve been this week... with a single friend, dropping kids off at daycare, people at work. That’s a lot of places you’ve potentially exposed. Even if it’s not covid, you don’t want anyone feeling like you do when you’re down and out.

We have got to be more diligent as physicians. Even if it’s the flu. We have to set the example. We can’t go to work sick, and probably should stay home and not see anyone. We can’t ask our colleagues to show up sick any more either. It’s not ok for our patients or our partners.

I KNOW we were all trained under a different mentality. I have been the mean girl in this situation. I know we’ve operated through fevers and hacking coughs and seen full days of clinics. Look where that got us, over 3,000 healthcare workers dead in the US let alone the 400,000 people that thought it was ok to go places when we are sick—because doctors do it all the time.

Staying home when we are sick is the right thing to do even though it sucks—for everyone—cancelled appointments, our colleagues that cover, and our own boredom. It’s not always easy to make up the calls later.

This is just another symptom of the toxic culture in healthcare (and I’m sure other industries) that we’ve been privy to and that need to change if we expect to do better for our patients AND ourselves. We’ve got to stop forcing this on younger generations just because “we did it and turned out fine”. We should be making it BETTER.

Surgery and Covid Don’t mean to be a Debbie Dow Surgery and Covid

Don’t mean to be a Debbie Downer, but surgery in the times of covid is much less fun than it used to be.

Why? Because patients with covid don’t do as well with surgery.

In the Annals of Surgery from September 2020, the Dutch found that patients with Covid had greater 30-day postoperative mortality rate (3.4x that of those without covid).

They also develop a greater number and more serious postop complications—mostly pulmonary embolism and other thromboembolic events.

In this study, those with Covid had a 30 day mortality rate of 16% compared to 4% in those without. Even among patients over 70, the worldwide death rate has been about 8% for those with Covid. Thankfully though this number was lower than last spring (20-24% mortality rates).

Peri operative SARS-CoV-2 infections increase mortality, pulmonary complications, and thromboembolic events: A Dutch, multi center, matched-cohort clinical study. Annals of Surgery. 169:2. September 24, 2020.

When this belly laugh was real.
When it felt like freedom.
When the skies opened up and rained down sunshine.
When you see a stage full of women empowering each other.
When you hear the most beautiful of words that bring tears to your eyes.
When the fireworks at the end of the day make your heart race hundreds of miles away.
When you stayed up until 1:30 to watch all the details from Inauguration Day because for some reason, this day has never felt quite this good.

We can’t just look the other way. We can’t qu We can’t just look the other way.

We can’t quote a man today and forget why he spoke tomorrow.

We can’t pretend one day a year that we are on the side of humanity.

But we can realize where we are, the work we have done and still have to do, and know that our actions speak much louder than our words.

And I’ve been spending more time finding out how to DO and less time talking.

Maybe we should all do the same. MLK did A LOT more than speak words for generations to quote when it’s convenient.

We can do better, and that’s what I think he was asking of us then, and even more so now.

Self care is not selfish. And today I needed it. Self care is not selfish.

And today I needed it. I didn’t feel it. I didn’t love my rides today and I certainly didn’t rock them. I felt bloated. I didn’t like the scale. I didn’t even like my outfit (although the back of this bra looks like a wrap dress and it’s 🤩).

But 50 minutes later I felt better about myself and my mind was in a better place. I even stopped snacking on all the crap food I was eating earlier in the day—and made dinner for the 5th time in a week.

I’m still not feeling like a badass body wise today, but at least I know I took care of me. And Ava got some kettlebell swings and push presses in too. 😂
